Lockdown Day 45

Hi!

I've spent much of the day working on scenics for Rusty Robots which will be featured in my post tomorrow but as I mentioned in yesterday's post, I thought I'd spend a bit of time exploring what inspires me to get so much stuff done over the Lockdown.

Initially I had found myself rather stuck with being on furlough and having a flat without a garden and only being able to go out for an hour a day was driving me a bit mental. Initially I decided to just paint the odds and ends I had lying around but soon found myself completing old projects such as my Deadloque stuff and Land Ironclads.

Envoy

As I worked on these random gubbins I rediscovered my enjoyment of sculpting and from this, my Rusty Robots have made a reappearance and with that I have really fallen back in love with a project that I'd abandoned about seven years ago and had thought utterly a lost cause.

Red Tribe Robots

Looking back, I can single out a few things that have inspired me back in the late 80's and all the way through to today.

Firstly, I watched the TV series, Robo Story, a 1985 cartoon series which involves a small girl and her dog getting accidentally shot into space and crash landing on a planet inhabited by robots.

It was an absolutely wonderful tv series and even though I only got to see a half dozen episodes of it, it has been really influential in the creation of The Scrapyard.

I must admit that I cannot remember much about the series but the visuals were really fantastic and I've discovered it is to be found on Youtube which will require me to watch it all!

Secondly, the spellbinding movie Labyrinth by Jim Henson has been possibly the biggest artistic influence on me over the years. The combination of Brian Froud's illustration and the Creature Workshop of Henson really were utterly captivating and although it's a fantasy setting, elements from the movie have made their way into my own work.

The rusty armour of the Goblins with their ramshackle appearance, not to mention steampowered goblin walker, still effects the imagery of The Scrapyard.

Even subconsciously it would appear as the Goblin City seems to look a lot like settlements around The Scrapyard! Just look at the structures in the background when compared to my scrap piles, the irregular, stonework or rusted and patched metal is influencing me without even realising it!

Moving on from the visuals and stories, gaming that has inspired me ranges through a lot of old and out of production stuff, be it 2nd edition 40k with it's bright and vibrant colours or Battletech with its giant stompy robots.

Speaking of Battletech, I recently found DEATH FROM ABOVE WARGAMING over on Youtube which has been quite entertaining to watch as they manage to condense a four hour game into about an hour and I've really been enjoying playing their battle reports!

Another sadly out of production and under appreciated game is Star Mogul. It came out in the mid  to late 2000's and for a brief time was a great little community with a wargame that wasn't just about shooting up your opponent. Instead, you could win games by grabbing salvage on abandoned settlements on the frontier of settled space. Imagine a sci-fi version of Frostgrave and it kind of covers what I'm talking about.

It is with this sort of remembered pleasure in nostalgic gaming and movies that has really inspired me to give Rusty Robots a real revamp and lo and behold, I have relished every minute of it, be it sculpting new robots, making scenery, or coming up with suitably outlandish scrap for my robotic minions to beat each other up over.

Tinker

With this, I seem to have really fully engaged with what actually makes me happiest about my hobby, to create my own stuff and play games with it and immerse myself with a setting that I have created over the course of years here and there and finally amongst the Pandemic Lockdown I have found the opportunity to do something about it.

This has the added bonus that I am spending so much time obsessing with my creations and scribbling that I haven't worried about Covid and as it has thus far cost a grand total of about £20 all told for greenstuff and bases, it's rather affordable too which is very handy when one is on furlough!

I have no intention of casting these robots up to sell as I know from bitter experience that the pressure to create not for my own enjoyment but for business takes all pleasure out of the process and results in Rusty Robots getting shelved for another 5-6 years and random wanderings into other projects.

Interestingly, the process of re-engaging with this project has been to give me the impetus to sculpt a rival force for my World of Ashes mini project which has a visual style that I enjoy and isn't super detailed like so many of the more modern ranges and I think there's a real pleasure to be had in painting a quirky, hand sculpted figure when so many technically advanced, 3d computer generated miniatures leave me utterly cold (I'm looking at you Age of Sigmar!). When combined to a ruleset that is fun and equally quirky, I find myself enjoying a hobby that has so often in the past left me burned out and prone to selling off everything in dismay.

Blue Tribe Davy Jones and B-Bomb Wrangler

Instead I have found myself relishing my hobby. The Rusty Robots project seems to be building up real momentum and I'm preparing to start work on my Blue Tribe before starting on the Yellows and on top of that my terrain collection is starting to look closer and closer to what I visualise The Scrapyard looking like.

Hopefully with a bit of work, I'll have all my basic robots sculpted and painted for the six tribes over the course of the next few weeks and battle reports will start making an appearance here again as I bodge together rules for scenarios, campaigns and other shenanigans!

With all the awful news that daily assaults us with the lockdown and so on, I find myself reassured and comforted by my hobby and hope to keep going, be it Rusty Robots, World of Ashes or my own version of Battletech inspired gubbins and keeping sane with an enjoyable hobby that allows me to be creative.

I hope others find themselves inspired by their hobby too and in some small way that playing with toy soldiers helps folks stay sane.

All the best!

Lockdown Day 44

Hi!

I've sent quite a bit of time building scenics today for my Rusty Robots project!

I've got a couple of buildings done already so I figured it was time to take a look at some other sorts of terrain, specifically some hilly ground to make the battlefield more visually appealing.

Initially, the action will be taking place in the Arid Rustlands and Red Mesa region so I'm looking to putting together some desert themed terrain but of a decidedly Rusty Robots variety!

After rummaging around for a while, I discovered I had a pack of foam activity tiles and decided to see if I could turn them into some compacted scrap piles which will double as hills.

Rusty Pile of Junk

I'm quite pleased with the results as the superglue I used didn't melt them but created a solid bond and then a coating of das clay and polyfilla gave a hard surface.

I then gave the whole thing a quick coat of paint to give the next step something to bind to. I then added lots of pieces of cardboard to give the effect of metal plating and then another coat of paint to prime it followed by lots of brown washes, drybrushing and little bits of detail.

As a test piece, I rather like the result and have got another couple of hills under construction at the moment. When combined with the other terrain gubbins I have at present, it gives a decent skirmish type battlefield effect covering about a square foot of board so I'll need to make a bunch more to kit out my 3'x3' board!

Before

I also need to get on with painting my Black Tribe marauders and have managed to prime them this morning before getting distracted by terrain so we shall see how things go in the next few days as I crack on with my assorted bits and bobs.

Red Tribe Forge

In other news, I've been thinking of having a bit of a blog post about what has inspired me to get so much stuff done over the last forty odd days or so and what I see myself working on over the foreseeable future as I've really rediscovered my love of sculpting and want to keep up the good work so to speak!

Arid Rustlands Scrap Hoodoo

I'll try and post my initial thoughts tomorrow so watch this space and in the meantime, All the best!

Lockdown Day 43

Hi!

Well I've managed to get the Red Tribe robots all painted and have spent the day working on an assortment of different odds and ends to get the Black Tribe robots ready.

 Scrapbot 42 joins the Expedition

The addition of Scrapbot 42 with his rather fine goggles completes the Red Tribe for the time being. I have actually just finished another pair of Reds who will give me some much needed close combat skills but I want to crack on with the Black Tribe for the moment so I can play some games using the little guys!

Reds hanging out at the Lone Star

I'm also building a test piece of terrain for my robots to fight over and once it's all done, I'll post some pics up of it but as I'm not sure if it's going to work out I'll hold off doing a terrain tutorial till it's done!

Next up, here's a larger Black Tribe specialist, the Brute:

Brute Bot

He's another old sculpt who was originally armed with a multi blaster and chainsaw and was going to be a Bully sculpt but is really too big so I've repurposed him with new arms and a few added details to bring him up to spec.

Looking at my Rusty Robots collection, I currently have eight of each the Reds and the Blacks so I think once I've got the Blacks painted up, I'll get on with the Blues who have spent far too much time reading old pirate adventures and have adopted a decidedly nautical theme in consequence!

In the meantime, All the best!

Lockdown Day 42

Hi!

I've spent most of today sculpting Rusty Robots and rummaging out my old sculpts, many of which will be incorporated into my ongoing project.

I've also rummaged out a few sketches of some random buildings that can be found scattered around The Scrapyard:

 Robot Dwellings

I also managed to play out a quick skirmish using my Song of Blasters rules which pitted a Red Tribe expedition against some Black Tribe raiders. After a shaky start, the Red Tribe managed to drive off the marauders. Alas I didn't take any photos as half the miniatures are currently unpainted but my next game should have some visual records!

I'm painfully aware that I need to construct a load of scenery to make my vision of The Scrapyard come to life as there's much need for cover, scrap to salvage and dangerous terrain to navigate so I think I will spend a bit of time tomorrow putting together scrap piles and steam vents so my next game will look a bit more visually appealing.

Scrapyard Factory

Unfortunately I think my Rusty Robots notebook with all my collected notes is in my locker at work so I cannot do much about it till I can get back into the shop which is a bit of a bind but I think I have more stuff strewn around the place and will try and start uploading more Rusty Robots stuff soon!

I've also got a couple of World of Twilight figures that I've started painting which I'll hopefully have finished tomorrow and will get pictures once they're done.

In the meantime, All the best!

Lockdown Day 41

Hi!

Here's the latest additions to my War of Ashes project:

Kuld!

I now have four normal Kuld and a Goola, the central figure in the picture who will be my warbands temporary leader until I get a few more figures sculpted up.

Game wise, the Kuld are a horde force who overwhelm foes by sheer weight of numbers and pummel them before consuming anything they find. I need to finish sculpts of another four of the little guys which will give me the basis of a decent little warband.

I'm also working on a Shuda, a corpulent Kuld who has the ability to vomit surprising distances which will give me some ranged firepower.

I'm really enjoying sculpting the little guys and at the rate I am going at, I'll have a decent sized warband within the next couple of weeks!

Hopefully tomorrow will see more painted Kuld and Rusty Robots so watch this space.

In the meantime, All the best!

Lockdown Day 40

Hi!

Well we're now 40 days into the Lockdown and still no end in sight so I've spent some more time sculpting!

Here's the first five Black Tribe Minions completed and the progress I've made on the Bully:

Armed with a mixture of cobbled together blasters and grubby hands, Minions are the basic Black Tribe underlings tasked with mischief and mayhem under the careful scanner of a Bully.

A while back I painted up an early version of the Black Tribe Minion that I sculpted a few years back for use with Somewhere on the Border:

Rogue Golem

The newer designs are a bit taller and slimmer in places but I'm looking forward to painting up the little villains and finishing off the Bully too who will be armed with a multi-blaster and power saw.

I've also finished painting the first five of my Kuld warband for War of Ashes and once their bases are done I'll post some pics of them too and I'm edging towards having enough Kuld and True Atronians to have a bit of a game to try out the War of Ashes: Shieldbash rules!

Speaking of rules, I've had a bit of a peruse through the World of Twilight ruleset and quite like what I see so I'll need to get the figures built and painted so I can try it out too but more on that for another day.

In the meantime, All the best!

Lockdown Day 39

Hi!

Just a quick update this evening as I've spent most of the day sculpting so not many painted miniatures to be seen but here's the latest additions to my assorted projects:

First up, here's another of my Red Tribe robots:

Scrapbot U-23

I've only got one more to paint of these little chaps before I move onto the Black Tribe which I've got almost ready for a lick of paint!

Next up, here's the first test piece for my Kuld warband for War of Ashes:

Kuld

He's a tiny little chap but was lots of fun to sculpt and paint and I've now got another stack of them finished so I'll be adding a full warband of tiny voracious eating machines to my collection soon!

I'm also going to be putting together a bit of a review of my World of Twilight purchase so watch this space.

All the best!
