Orks and Necromutants

 Hi!

As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been slowly getting some of the figures I've painted over the last few months photographed so I can get them on the blog so here's the latest batch in the form of some Orks and a Necromutant!

Some of you may remember from a few months back me bemoaning the fact that I'd painted an Ork that was so dull that I'd all but given up, and here he is. The modern plastic GW Ork is an incredibly uninspiring figure to work on and I have no idea how folks can manage to churn out an entire army of them but he's done and dusted and will probably be classed as a Skarboy for my small warband.

The other figure on the left is a classic plastic Ork which I completed the other week and he was an absolute blast to work on compared to his modern descendant. The detail is softer, the pose a bit less dynamic but despite that he oozes character and almost painted himself and I'm glad I've still got another dozen or so of these guys sat awaiting a coat of paint as I really don't think I can bear painting another modern GW figure.

Next up, Ironically is another modern figure, this time a Mantic Marauder converted into a Necromutant for some Warzone skirmishing:

The figure itself is a Manic Marauder body from their Deadzone set with a GW head and old early 90's shoulderpad from the Ork set by GW. If I was to do the conversion again I'd probably sculpt a more suitable head but he'll do until I can get my hands on some official miniatures!

On a side note, the figure is made from Restic, a weird slightly rubbery plastic that had some truly appalling mould lines which needed carving off and doesn't fit particularly well together either but with a decent coat of paint he's turned out quite nicely.

My next post will cover some wild ramblings about solo gaming and scenario design but I need to get my notes into some sort of order so it may be later in the week before I get it posted up so until then, All the best!

Lockdown 2.0 Project Log Day 38: Abomination!

 Hi!

As promised, here's the big guy I've been working on over the last couple of days, the terrifying Abomination!

The Abomination

Originally he was a cheap Gormitti toy that I cut off the original odd head and sculpted my own alongside some biorganic cables. He also had a spike for aa hand so I turned it into a claw for extra pinching factor.

The Abomination is one of the larger and more unpleasant bio constructs created by the twisted science of the Dark Legion and is a rampaging titan of destruction. Eschewing any ranged weapons, the Abominations thick carapace and dense musculature is proof against any small arms and quite a few heavier weapons. It will attempt to charge whatever foe it sees and revels in destruction making it a terrifying foe.

The Abomination has only been sighted recently on Genos XV and is responsible for the utter destruction of several Imperial patrols and outposts leaving a gory path of dead in its wake. Pict capture has identified the beast as originally being Altus Torrence, a Xeno Explorator whose expedition vanished over a year ago and until the appearance of the Abomination, was thought dead. It now appears he fell into the hands of The Tekrons of the Dark Legion and has been twisted into the terror he now appears. The fate of his companions are still unknown.

Under the basic pre-painted scheme, there's actually quite a nice model with interesting armour and he makes for quite an effective bio-beast for the Dark Legion, a Dreadnaught for Chaos types or even one of the larger gribblies for the Plague. He cost me about £3.00 back when I was at Uni about ten years ago and I suspect is available super cheaply on Ebay. While the sculpt is a bit cartoony, theres some nice figures in the range that would make awesome Elementals, beasties and whatnot for any game system with a bit of work and are great for gamers on a budget.

Armoured Buttock Plates are a must!

I did a bit of experimenting with the paint scheme, going for a ruddy pink to represent flayed skin and raw flesh and quite like how it turned out. The spikes could have done with being sharpened up a bit but he'll do.

I now want to get some Undead Legionnaires and a Necromutant to add to my Dark Legion force but will have to wait till Warzone Eternal comes out (or I can find a bargain on Ebay!)

Imperial Security Troops have a bad day...

Speaking of Warzone, I've just sat and watched the VIDEO of Res Nova founder Alex Kanous in discussion with Bryan Steele, Warzone Eternal's rules and background writer and am really loving how things are developing. I am literally on the edge of my seat for more information on Warzone Eternal and really look forward to seeing what the rules, miniatures and artwork are like. If you're interested in how things develop, it's well worth taking a peek at the video and joining the Warzone Eternal Facebook Page.

Lockdown 2.0 Project Log Day 31: Make it Your Own!

 Hi!

I've tried to put together todays update twice now and have waffled a great deal of nonsense but on re-reading them, decided to delete them as they were utter guff.

Instead, I'm going to take a quick peek at some inspirational baddies that I'm planning on importing into my alternative Imperium!

The Pharon

The Pharon hark from the pocket dimension of Vor and are one of the big bads from the setting. In Vor, the Pharon gained immortality but at a terrible cost with much of the population turned into decaying mummies but the nobles being rather better preserved. They have a lot of similar vibes to the Necron from GW so I can see combining elements of both into my own version of the Imperium.

As my own version of the Imperium is heavily based on Greek and Roman mythology, the Pharon will symbolise a different pantheon to allow me to incorporate Egyptian gods, goddesses and monsters into my own setting with the Pharon being the ruling caste but also allowing for human and other, xenos races as followers.

The Kryomek

The Kryomek are an awesome concept that comes from the game of the same name and incorporate elements of the Aliens movies and the Tyranids. I've been tempted by a bio-organic alien race for some time and love the style of the utterly alien species and want to get these guys infesting abandoned ships and overrunning settlements on the border!

The Dark Legion

The Dark Legion are the villains from Warzone and hail from another dimension and seek to destroy humanity and rule supreme! I plan on having these monstrous types as the followers of The Titans, the ancient gods who the first Emperor chained forever but whose followers seek their return. I've never been a fan of the whole evil chaos of GW and far prefer these insidious bad guys with their bio-tech, zombies and all manner of other dimensional horrors!

They will allow for cults to destroy the Imperium from within too! Elements of The Dark Legion will be representing the assorted Warp Entities from the original Rogue Trader book too and I've got lots of ideas for tying them all together in the Alternate Imperium.

The Plague

The Plague are created by an alien pathogen and tinkered with by unscrupulous megacorporations in Mantics Warpath and Deadzone games. I like the idea of hordes of infectious zombies with some big tank like genetic monstrosities rampaging through frontier settlements. Alternative Imperium wise, are they going to be unleashed due to an ancient pathogen, a punishment of the gods, genetic experimentation gone horribly wrong or a sinister scheme of the Dark Legion? Only time will tell!

I hope to put together some more background fleshing out in the next few days as well as show some more completed miniatures and terrain so until then, All the best!

Warzone With A Difference and Other Ponderings...

Hi!

Well my holidays are rapidly drawing to a close and the car is in for its MOT so we can't go out for the day, much to my frustration as it's the first sunny day this week! On the plus side, it has allowed me to get a bit of painting finished on some more Dark Legion figures that I sculpted while on the Isle of Skye:

 Undead Legionnaires and Necromutant Leader

Again they are a bunch of rather cartoony sculpts but were rather fun to put together and give me the core of a Dark Legion patrol for Warzone. Standing 20mm to the eye, they are mounted on 20mm round bases and should eventually be joined by some reinforcements as 4 legionnaires can't shoot for toffee.

I've also named them in honour of the places we visited on the Isle too!
 Necromutant Valtos

 Legionnaire Skye

 Legionnaire Portree

 Legionnaire Uig

 Legionnaire Staffin

Hopefully there will eventually be another 4-6 Legionnaires and a full squad of Necromutants led by a Centurion but they are on the backburner a bit as I have other bits and bobs that are getting me interested in 28mm at the present so I'm not sure when they, or my SD Orks will get rounded out a bit.

 Dark Legion Patrol

Here's a shot of the group with their exalted leader, Moloch the Nepharite of Algeroth:
Evil Minions!

I must admit there's a certain amount of satisfaction to seeing the group finished and painted and it reminds me of the halcyon days of university when I put together the Boar Company as I couldn't afford to buy any miniatures so sculpted my own!

Now the other big news that is roaring around the interwebs at the moment is the leaked images of the new Age of Sigmar game and it does appear to be very different from the whole Fantasy Battle aesthetic but I must admit I am a tad disappointed as GW have basically made a mash up of 40k and Fantasy battle rather than really trying something different. Still its too early to tell what the world they develop will look like so I am reserving judgement until I see the eventual release.

In my previous post, I made a great deal of waffle about having a bash at a 28mm scale fantasy army or sorts and must admit that I have had lots of ideas as to the sort of force I want to put together but the problem being is I currently can't settle on just what I want so I am going to spend today pondering over and developing a few ideas and then post them up on my blog here with a bit of a poll to see what you folks think!

Till then, all the best!

Warzone With A Difference...

Hi!

Just a quick post before I head out to work!

Here's another SD miniature I've put together in the form of a mighty grumpy Nepharite of Algeroth from Warzone:

Moloch The Disgruntled

Standing about 30mm to eye level, I am quite pleased with how he turned out but if I was to do him again, I suspect I would rework the bottom jaw considerably as it doesn't quite fit right. Still he does look the part for a leader of a Dark Legion force I am working on at present!

Moloch the Disgruntled from the rear

We are off on holiday up north for a week as of the weekend so I won't be updating the blog till I get back but hopefully I will have lots of energy for sculpting and painting from all that fresh air (as long as I'm not faint from bloodloss caused by midges!)

All the best!
