Lockdown Day 46

Hi!

Here's the new Scrap pile I finished yesterday evening:

Scrapyard Terrain

I'm really pleased by how the terrain I've made seems to be really tying the artwork and setting together with the miniatures to get the look that I had always envisioned for my Rusty Robots game.

As with the last piece of scrap, this is made from play mat foam, polyfilla and lots of cardboard scraps. I also added some doodads using wire to add a bit of ramshackle interest into the piece.

Whilst these are pretty generic rusty browns, I will be adding some more colour with some of the scrap piles having tribal colours on them and I've really enjoyed adding the odd glyph here and there which really stands out on the browns.

I have spent a bit of time this morning cutting up the rest of the foam that I had lying around which will give me enough to make a fair amount of scenery and hope to keep plugging away at it over the coming weeks to give me lots of interesting scrap for my robots to fight over.

I've tried to make the scenery multi use so buildings can be stacked on top of the scrap piles and the scrap piles can be combined together in interesting fashion to create larger terrain pieces. Once the next piece is done, I will be cracking on with getting my Black Tribe finished though as they will allow me to get some battle reports put together too and I'm rather excited by the prospect as well!

I plan on making most of the terrain pretty generic to begin with to represent a typical scene from anywhere in The Scrapyard but as each force gets built, there will be some tribe specific stuff to liven things up, be it Pipe Forests, Tox Pools, Pirate Ships, Trading Posts or Forges.

Hopefully I'll have the first Black Tribe robot painted and ready to go by this time tomorrow so watch this space but in the meantime, All the best!

    1. Thanks!

I have a rather cartoony style and would love to be able to paint in the more gritty Blanchistsu style that you see so many of the oldhammer community producing but I just can't do it!

Handily it works out better to have a cartoony paint style when working on my own cartoony sculpts!

    2. Well, whatever works, really. I have mixed feelings on the Blanchitsu style, and if it isn't something you naturally tend towards, I'd suggest leaving it. Besides, your work is very stylish anyhow. It really feels like your own little world.

I wish I was back at work to be honest as I love selling books but needs must and if it's helping or inspiring others, even better!

It's the hobby that's keeping me sane whilst locked in!

  4. Speaking of "pretty generic (rusty) browns", any thoughts on your paints? Fave brands, must have products...

Is cool to see what can be a game changer for someone is just useless junk for others. Sometimes reading what others are using gets you inspired, you give it a go and who knows... It might make your (my) day.

    1. Hi!

Many thanks! The paints I've used for years have come from Ral Partha Europe which were the same stuff that was the official Warzone Paints. They had a fantastic range of colours and whilst sometimes a bit on the thin side, with care they were brilliant. Sadly they've changed the range now and I've not had chance to pick any up to give them a try yet.

I actually stumbled across the cheap acrylics that The Works and The Range sells here in the UK called Docrafts Artiste which are cheap as chips and really rather good. Their Mocha is particularly good for washes and rust and it reminds me of the old GW Chestnut Brown ink.

They're fab for scenery and larger scale stuff and I've also started using them for miniatures too as my Ral Partha paints run low.

I'll try and put a post up on them over the next day or two!
