Making Sense of Projects - Farpoint

 Hi!

While work has been busy, and at times needlessly and inexplicably stressful of late, I thought I'd spend a bit of time looking at my evolving Farpoint setting and try to make some sense of where its going and what I could do with developing...

The Farpoint Sector is located at the north western rim of Imperial space in my own re-imagined Imperium. Chaos and the Warp isn't a thing and instead of being stuck in a technological dark age and beset by foes on all fronts, there is no GRIMDARK in my setting (not that I don't appreciate it but my painting style and figures just don't lend themselves to it).

Space travel is much more secure these days with the discovery of the Tannhauser Gate, a gigantic space station that opens wormholes between far flung planets that does away with the warp and all the chaotic madness that can be found within. Ships also have FTL drives which will allow for interplanetary travel too but the Tannhauser network is at the core of the system with the core worlds having one in each system and each frontier sector having one located in the sector capitol world.

The Imperium is in a Renaissance of sorts with lost technology and ideas being rediscovered, new and long forgotten planets, clusters and secrets long lost being explored by a new wave of Imperial might. Brave expeditions are being launched out from the core systems and humanity is going back into the dark wilds beyond the frontier!

Similarly, the obsession with the Emperor isn't there, the Golden Throne doesn't have a corpse sat on it on ancient Terra. There is currently an Empress, Lionstone who is a force to be reckoned with and decidedly mercurial and Machiavellian but a generally just ruler.

Instead of the cult of the Emperor (or in this case Empress), the Greek Gods are still worshipped. These iconic manifestations of some of humanity's oldest creeds are very real and as with the gods of old, love to meddle in human affairs. They have their heroes and demi-gods, avatars of faith and all manner of other interesting manifestations can be found in the galaxy at large. It will also give me the excuse to integrate some of the mythological characters, locations and monsters into things.

Imagine Ulysses 31 meets 40k with a bit of British Empire thrown into the mix...

Farpoint itself is a frontier sector and as such, there is lawlessness and opportunity to be found in equal parts. The sectors previous Governor was Baron Alexandr Vosk, a venal and corrupt individual who made himself immensely wealthy by shamelessly taking bribes, theft and essentially running the place like a personal fiefdom.

Unfortunately for Vosk but fortunately for the rest of the sector, the Empress has got word of his injustices, and the reduced revenues from Imperial tithes has seen her unseat Vosk and replace him with Laars von Dorn, a loyalist and rather incorruptible sort who she's tasked with bringing the sector to heel and profitability.

While Vosk has lost his position, he has enough clout and blackmail amongst the levers of power within the Imperium that by greasing quite a few palms with bribes, he's avoided official sanction and has retreated to his expansive estates to plot and intrigue to dispose of von Dorn and reclaim his lucrative position.

As such there is a secret war taking place across the sector as von Dorn and loyal Imperial units fight shadowy skirmishes with Vosk operatives, criminal organisations and various alien warlords who want to use the upheaval to settle scores or reclaim lost territories.

There's a patchwork of alliances, rivalries and vendettas forming between the assorted lesser houses of the sector with sides being chosen and old grudges being settled. Be it the Longmyres siding with von Dorn or the crimelord Lucius Goldberg supporting Vosk from the shadows.

It's proving to be an interesting mash up of a setting and slightly a somewhat bewildering prospect to try and shape and navigate!

A few years ago I put together some articles on different elements of the reimagined Imperium and I think I need to re-investigate it as well as making some dossiers on my assorted characters and their backgrounds and exploits as it gets a bit confusing (I've at various times called Laars von Dorn and van Dorn for example!).

As such, I think that I'm going to begin by trying to dig into the background and setting to give my characters and factions something to stick to and take a bit of a look at the systems within the sector and begin trying to stitch it all together into a more unified whole.

I've been influenced by all sorts over the years so do expect to see some elements pulled from all over as its my setting and I want to make it a fun experience!

Expect to see all sorts of random posts over the coming months as I try to integrate and flesh out all the elements I've got in my head ranging from the Space Marines being normal humans for the most part, not superhuman psychos, droids and AI being a thing in the Imperium, slightly civilised Orks, resurgent Eldar, sinister cults of the Titans and so much more!

Hopefully I'll have some more stuff to post over the next few days and will keep you updated but in the meantime, All the best!

2025 Planning of a Sort

 Hi!

So here we are in 2025 and I thought I'd post a bit of inspiration for myself.

First up, I'm going to have to face facts. There is no way I've got the time, space or indeed motivation for any big projects this year. I had hopes to finally make a decent attempt at Leviathan but until I have some more spare time and indeed space for gaming, I think I'm going to have to shelve that particular project for a while.

What I do think I can manage is something more modest. Namely some teeny warbands for Brutal Quest or Planet 28.

Both rulesets are wonderfully simple but fun and I've had a great deal of enjoyment from using them over the years, especially as I only need 2-3 figures a side and a small gaming space which really lends itself to narrative driven and character based projects which suits me more than a larger warband or army based project.

Now I immediately have a bit of a spanner in the works of getting gaming going in early January as our kitchen ceiling is finally getting fixed after a full twelve months of hassling the letting agent from upstairs whose previous tenant so kindly flooded our kitchen with their crappy washing machine on repeated occasions. I'm so relieved its finally getting done but it does mean that I'm expecting workmen wandering in and out for the best part of a week while the ceiling comes down and is replaced, plastered and painted.

While this gets done, the hobby time will be taking a back seat but I plan on using the time to continue fleshing out my Aeroth, Farpoint and Stump settings with a bit of a vague idea of creating a crib book for each which will be incorporated into my mini campaigns.

I have a lot of ideas I want to work on this year and I do have hopes that I'll be able to make a bit of a bash at getting them developed beyond nebulous planning and into something that will keep me entertained and motivated!

In the meantime, All the best!

More Art and a Map!

 Hi!

I've got quite a lot going on with work at the moment, especially with the arrival of the summer hols and the host of events we've got coming up but have managed to get some more hobby bits and bobs finished!

First up, here's an Imperial assault lander:

Its a bit 2d but thats kind of how I work and I really enjoyed working on it! The ship is pen and ink with art markers while the background is acrylic paint. I'm hoping to get more artwork put together so I can make a proper guide to Farpoint.

Speaking of which, here's an updated map of the Farpoint Sector:

As the Hathor Campaign continues, I will be adding to it with new locations and artwork to start fleshing it out so watch this space!

Tomorrow will hopefully see me getting the pictures taken of the assorted figures and scenery that I've got finished but until then, All the best!

15mm Scale Hive Terrain

Hi!

It's been a bit quiet here for the last couple of weeks but I've been really busy with hobby related shenanigans!

I've been collecting used till rolls for quite a while now to use for some suitably grubby industrial hive terrain and I've spent the last two weeks building and painting the first few pieces:

 First Hive terrain

I've got lots more on the go at the moment including some larger pieces which I will be adding to the collection in the coming weeks.

At present, the largest piece of terrain I have is the Core Column:

Made from a toilet roll, till roll cores and assorted plastic, card and wire, it will eventually provide me with a second level of walkways to heighten the battlefield.

I made a point of making the terrain as grubby as possible and went to town on adding rust, dust and lots of graffiti.

I've also got some more figures painted! The chap on the left is a heavy industrial unit from GZG and painted up really nicely. The other figure is from Alternative Armies Space Viking range and was sculpted by myself many moons ago.

 Hive Denizens

I've painted him up as another member of my Demihuman force and while the figure is a bit crude, I rather enjoyed painting him.

Next up, there's the vent column, a slightly shorter piece of terrain but still adds some much needed height to the board:

Again I went to town with adding washes to give the piece a really grubby finish and added lots of graffiti, including the MOFO logo (MOllusc Freedom Organisation).

Next up, there's the smaller columns which I need to make another half dozen or so to finish off my terrain collection:

I've really been enjoying making this terrain and need to build some larger structures for my assorted forces to fight over including more surface level terrain but I have plans for processing plants, tox pools and industrial cranes as well as landing pads, downtrodden shanties and lots more!

It's interesting that moving back to 15mm scale has really got me engaged in not only painting figures and playing the odd game, I'm also feverishly constructing terrain and even sculpting some odd bits and bobs to flesh out my existing forces!

Speaking of which, I've just finished a trio of Squigs for my Grots to prod about:

Squig!

They took very little effort to put together and I'm looking forward to having them finished and added to my fledgling Badmoon warband!

Hopefully I will be able to add some more gubbins to my blog in the coming weeks but we are away on holiday next week so I am hoping to have a relaxing time down south and will be taking a sketchbook with me to thrash out some ideas I have for everything from terrain to figures to the background of my Alternative Imperium so watch this space!

All the best!

For Move We Must!

Evening folks!

We're busily moving house so there's not going to be any updates for the next week or two!

On the plus side, I'll have access to all my rulebooks, art materials and figures and I have plans to start playing out some games too which should be fun!

Farpoint is Buzzing!

Once things are sorted, moved and unboxed, I will be giving Tales From Farpoint a bit of a shot in the arm with lots more articles about the Imperium, Farpoint and it's denizens as well as pics of stuff I've been slowly painting my way through!

In the meantime, All the best!

Small Scale Sci-Fi Blog

Hi!

Following my previous two posts, I've decided to start a blog dedicated to all things 15mm Sci-fi.

SMALL SCALE SCI-FI GAMING is going to contain weekly updates of new 15mm sci-fi  releases as well as lots of pics showcasing all manner of 15mm goodness as well as terrain making, converting and battle reports and lots more.

To get the ball rolling, I've posted a showcase of the Ghoulani Enslavers which used to be available from 15mm.co.uk.

Ghoulani!

Back to Farpoint news, the Ghoulani are going to be some of the local troublemakers of the region. Everyone needs some dodgy aliens who have a hobby of kidnapping random hicks and probing them while mutilating their Grox herd.

Villainous Experimentation!

I've still got a fair few left to paint and will be adding some drones, ghoulish experiments and vehicles to the force to give me a decent little skirmish force to pester the inhabitants of Farpoint.

I've also got a new NPC for Farpoint:

Thorian Swordsmaster

Thorians hale from beyond the border of the Imperium and are a gregarious lot who sell their services as hired muscle. They are ferocious and skilled assault troops who glory in battle and celebrate by quaffing vast quantities of alcohol. Armed with a massive Power Sword, Ulf the Bold is currently in search of gainful employment and has already butted heads with both law enforcement and the local gangs of Freeport City.

Despite being a bit of a barbarian, he still has a firm sense of right and wrong and following an unfortunate incident when a local gang leader tried to extort Ulf's favourite tavern, resulting in the place being trashed and the gang leader and several goons finding themselves suddenly missing heads.

I'm hoping to add some more NPCs in the coming weeks, not to mention some more urban scenery to give me some dingy streets for folks to fight over!

The Re-Imagined Imperium Revised!

Hi!

Well we're back from an amazing week in Rome and countless hours of investigating aged ruins and beautiful art and I've found myself re-exploring my re-imagined Imperium.

Whereas my previous attempts did away with the Grimdark and moved tech forward a bit, having visited the glories of Rome, I feel I need to take things a few steps further and really get my teeth into the setting and rework it some more to suit how my ideas are slowly developing!

To begin with, I am thinking of doing away with the Gothic feel of the Imperium and replacing it with something altogether more classical with more than a hint of the British Empire, Dune and quite a few other sci-fi novels added to the mix!

With that in mind, I've been poring through my art book collections and the thousands of photos we took whilst on holiday for suitable inspiration and hope to begin fleshing things out over the course of the coming week.

I'm thinking of the Imperium at large being more like the Roman Empire at it's height with lots of marble columns, grand sculpture and a more classical look to them. Also in the past the Imperium was much larger but due to The Horus Heresy and assorted wars and pandemics, the Imperium shrank back within it's borders for over a millennium but now fresh armies and explorers are setting out to reclaim lost worlds.

Imagine Imperial Conquistadores leading small expeditions in search of lost cities of gold, Rogue Traders plying the frontier and trading with civilisations of aliens and humans outwith the Imperial remit and the Imperial forces themselves getting a bit of a rethink too with Legions of power armoured troops, Imperial Auxiliaries and at the heart of the Imperium, Empress Lionstone playing off the noble houses against one another to further her plans.

I am hoping to crack on with using a mixture of figures from a wide assortment of manufacturers from sci-fi to fantasy and historical to start fleshing out the inhabitants of the Imperium and will also be sculpting my own bits and bobs when needed as I've got some cracking ideas I want to try out!

I also need to re-explore my scenery collection and really go to town with building some suitable locales for the inhabitants of the Imperium to live in, fight over, loot and explore!

This will give me the opportunity to play around with lots of monolithic ruins as well as a lot of new buildings and scenery to work with and I am also taking lots of inspiration from the Orientalist painters with their rather fabulous illustration of twisting alleys and lush, exotic decorations on buildings for Farpoint itself.

Imagine something like this but with alien traders, weird beasts and ramshackle vehicles, not to mention bulky tech liberally strewn around the place with Imperial Legionaries patrolling the streets!

All in all, I need to spend quite a bit of time going through my original notes for my Re-Imagined Imperium but I am rather looking forward to the opportunity!

In other news, I have been slowly painting through some Xenos scum for my Imperials to mix it up with and hope to show some pics later on this weekend once everything's painted and based. I am also going to be showing a few NPC's for Farpoint as well as exploring the setting in a bit more depth so do check back!

All the best!

Imperial Presence Increases on Farpoint

Hi!

My Governor General's Imperial Guard unit has received some reinforcements in the form of a rounded out command squad and complete first squad as well as a Sentinel scout walker!

Imperial Guard Squad plus Sentinel Support on Maneuver, Freeport City

The standard Imperial Guard squad operating on Farpoint is armed with Imperial Industries Combat Las-Guns and flak armour while the heavy weapons element is a Imperial Industries MK3 Grenade Launcher and a Regis XV heavy bolter.

The above photo was taken outside Professor Abullah's house in Freeport City, the capitol of Farpoint and a den of gamblers, thieves and smugglers as well as other ne'er do wells. As tensions have mounted, Governor General von Dorn has authorised armoured support in the form of Sentinel Armoured Scout Walkers.

Dorn Class Sentinel

Produced on the Imperial Fist homeworld of Inwit, the Dorn Class Sentinel is a highly mobile and well armed scout vehicle. Sporting advanced sensors and a powerful assault cannon, they have been a mainstay of Imperial regiments throughout the region for decades.

The Sentinel is scratch built by myself out of plastic, sculpey and assorted bits and bobs and I must admit that I am quite fond of the little guy, so much so that I am making a second one at the moment!

House troops of the Governor General

I'm slowly putting together a platoon of Imperial troops to mix it up with the assorted villains that inhabit the sector and despite the tedium of batch painting, am quite pleased with my progress thus far. Sadly I seem to have run out of miniatures to paint so may skip onto some baddies next or possibly paint a few more Ultramarines!

 The force thus far!

Game wise, I have the bare bones basics of an Imperial Guard force and need lots more troops and armour to really make it a workable force in 2nd edition or 8th edition but I hope to add to their numbers over the coming months.

Last but not least, Governor General Laars van Dorn has posed for a posed for his first official portrait since arriving on Farpoint:

The Governor General of Farpoint, Laars van Dorn!

Hopefully I'll get some more bits and bobs done soonish but we're about to start packing to move house so expect rather intermittent posts in the short term!

All the best!

Governor General's Retinue and More!

Hi!

I've been churning my way through some more bits and bobs that I've had on my desk for quite a while and have got some of the Governor General of Farpoint's retinue finished!

The Governor General, Master of Arms and personal defence squad as well as mandatory spoiled and willful daughter!

I'm really liking how the little guys are turning out and I've now got vague ideas of expanding them into a full platoon...

Next up, there's the Governor Generals ride, a Silverthorn class lander:

 Swish Ride

It's originally a Syntha grav tank for 28mm but I figure it looks pretty decent for a 15mm shuttle of some sort. The only conversion I did was to add the small dome on the roof and it's done (looking at it I am oddly reminded of a Reaver Titans head...)

No ship would be complete without crew though so I've got a couple of hardy types to fly the thing:

Dashing Crew

I'm rather taken with the colour scheme of the Governor General's retinue so look forward to adding some more vehicles to the mix and am already planning some flag draped buildings to give the more salubrious parts of Farpoint some class.

 The Governor on tour.

I'm still not sure what I am going to use rules wise for the force with Rogue Trader, 2nd edition 40k, new 40k, Necromunda/Shadow War and Gruntz all a possibility but I think I am going to just keep painting and see how we go!

Next up, the grunts of the Governor's guard:

 Lowly Footsloggers

They are Ground Zero Games colonial militia but I like the caps which kind of remind me of the Atreides from the Dune Movie and have a bit more panache than the more heavily armoured types.

Finally, it's not all been 15mm! I have finally finished the Bloodbound unit champion who can lead his savage brethren:

 Khorne!

He's a cracking figure and deserved the extra time I spent on finishing him but I am glad to be mixing things up a bit so I don't get bored.

Khorne Champion

Hopefully I'll get a few Stormcasts painted this weekend as well as more denizens of Farpoint so watch this space!

All the best!

A Return to the Farpoint Sector

Hi!

Well it's been quite some time since I've had chance to do much of anything hobby related, mostly because of real life tedium like work which has sadly intruded more than I'd like to admit over the last three months.

Still, I figured I'd best get back to work on some hobby related gubbins soon to try and get my mojo back and with that in mind, I thought I'd crack on and see if I can summon up a bit of enthusiasm for my alternative Imperium setting.

Looking at my previous ramblings, I possibly went a bit scattergun in my approach to Farpoint, trying to paint up stuff in 6mm, 15mm and 28mm scale and giving myself almost endless factions to try and flesh out and paint.

I've got the vague idea of putting together a rather cramped and jumbled frontier city teeming with lowlifes and ne'er do wells and random xenos races. Farpoint is a melting pot as dozens of races and cultures from both sides of the border coming to trade, strike dodgy deals and all manner of shady goings on.

Whilst Farpoint is the administrative centre of the sector, it's previous Governor was renowned for his corruption and it's up to his replacement to bring back law and order to the wild frontier!

With that in mind, I want to take the time to actually build a few small skirmish forces and starting with the Governor General's personal retinue. The man himself will need representing along with his security team and assorted hangers on. I've already got some bits and pieces put aside and will be doing a little bit of converting before getting bits and bobs painted up.

I also want to put together some suitably grotty buildings to represent some of the mean streets for my forces to battle over so I will be rummaging out some boxy shapes to work on. Hopefully my burst of creativity will keep me entertained into the new year so watch this space!

All the best!

Kings of War

Hi!

I've been taking a peek at the Kings of War rules by Mantic and its looking quite promising.

Handily the figure basing and basic unit types in the game will be suitable to cross over into Warhammer Fantasy too and despite initial misgivings about the Dwarves, I have seen some really rather nicely painted over at HOUR OF WOLVES:

Dwarves by Hour of Wolves

Hopefully my small order will arrive early next week so I can have a bash at putting them together and will post a bit of a review of them too!

I am planning on converting the Dwarves I get to represent something akin to the Clans from Chronopia which should be fairly straightforward with the addition of some boar tusks or horns to their helmets or some feathered plumes. This will also mean that they can double for a Chronopia force too if I should decide to do anything with it too...

Depending on how things go I think I may end up collecting a few more of Mantics Dwarves but no matter what I will be re-working some small elements of them, especially their faces and beards. They look fine for Imperial Dwarves from the Warhammer world with finely tailored beards but for proper Dwarves they are a tad too neat looking and could do with a bit of converting!

The other thing I will be changing is to give them different shields as I do think that round shields suit Dwarves better and will add a bit of individuality and character to different units.

This brings me onto the background for the force I am planning! The unit will represent one of the regiments of the great Dwarf hold of Kareth Dul which guards one of the only passes through the Firepeak Mountains. Further regiments will be raised, both from the Hold and from some of the outlying settlements as the Dwarven King Gunnar Orinsson seeks to hold onto his territories from marauding bands of Orcs and Goblins.

The army will of course feature the Boar Company acting as a Ranger company and there will be plenty of opportunities for their arch enemy, the rogue sorcerer Rubik Goldhelm to muddy the waters by leading his skeletal legions against them!
The location of the game will be transposed from Aeroth (the setting of the Leviathan game) to Farpoint and the mountainous frontier of the Dwarven empire in the Firepeak Mountains.

Farpoint is a world driven by magic, wild and ancient and its landscape is constantly changing due to the effect of magical storms. The Dwarven empire lies in the mountainous central region of Farpoint which has survived much of the chaos caused by the storms and is therefore much sought after by the other races who inhabit the world.

Over the coming week or so I will try and outline the history of the planet along with a guide to its inhabitants and civilisations so keep an eye open!

All the best!
