Hi!
I'm taking a bit of a break from all the sci-fi again to have a bit of a ponder about some fantasy, specifically Warhammerish fantasy.
Now, I must admit that I'm finding myself tempted by the call of Warhammer but have thus far resisted the call as I don't have the space for such a large undertaking but I do wonder about trying out some smaller scale shenanigans, namely either Warhammer Quest or Mordheim.
Saying that, there is a really passionate community for the game so with a bit of patience and a lot of printing out, I could bodge something together and make the board sections myself so it's an option.
I'll need to have a bit of a think about either option and there's nothing to stop me from playing both as I just need to put together an assortment of random miniatures and off we go or I could just use the rules and change the setting to something completely different, be it a lost city teeming with danger and waiting to be plundered in the lost continent of Crucible or the decaying remains of an Elven Obelisk from Leviathan...
I'll wait for my foamcore to arrive and see what I can come up with but I must admit that if I had the space and cash, I'd be sorely tempted by some Warhammer, specifically 6th edition. I know everyone waxes lyrical about 3rd but it was before my time and the sheer number of cards, tokens and random guff you needed for 4th and 5th was a bit off putting but the miniatures from the late 80s to late 90's were rather fantastic. Combined with the fact that I played a lot of 6th edition and remember really enjoying it, I suspect I'd go for that version of the game over any other.
Ah, Mordheim was going to be my Lockdown 1.0 project! I reread the rule book and all the issues of Town Cryer, wrote up some warbands, my wife even managed to grab me some foam core from the art shop just before we went into full lockdown - then a buddy messaged me asking ‘have you seen Rangers of Shadow Deep? It’s solo fantasy’ and derailed me completely...
ReplyDeleteI've been tempted by Rangers of Shadow Deep but the cost of the rules have been giving me pause, especially as I picked up Frostgrave when it came out first and found it a bit meh.
DeleteI may have to pick up a copy as it's getting such positive reviews and I've watched one of the Lets Play videos of it over on Guerrilla Miniature Games and it does look good.
That old Warhammer itch... don't we feel it all?
ReplyDeleteSo true! I'm actually leaning towards some 15mm scale gubbins again because of the temptation of mass battles!
DeleteOur club had quite a good warhammer group in it for a while, but it was fractured when 8th came along, and then GW blew it up. We still play a Mordheim campaign every year and we have been talking about giving 6th another try. As ever with GW, the issue isnt so much teh rules as the army books, but as its a long dead game we could houserule the worst of it.
ReplyDeleteI actually just discovered Warhammer Renaissance which combines the best of 4th/5th/6th editions. A quick read through has left me with a real temptation to give it a go as it streamlines things but keeps some entertaining characters, magic and whatnot interesting.
